Before and After: The Estate [May. 25th, 2008|09:44 pm]
So, my dad's house has been completely cleaned out and last week we sold it! We were initially going to renovate it, but decided there was just too much to do, so we decided to market it to house flippers. Our real estate agent described it as "a real dog!" in the listing--And we got 6 offers of varying amounts and one of them was over our asking price.

It's been just over 3 months since my dad died. Even though we hadn't seen the house we grew up in for over 15 years...I have to admit I was kind of sad to sell it...I'm not sure why. Will. deal. with. feelings. later.

And because we all love before and after shots...Enjoy... )

It smelled... [May. 15th, 2008|11:49 am]
wonderful outside this morning! So nice and fresh. I love it!

I am seriously considering getting cable. I hate court tv. I HATE IT. I didn't think I'd ever say it.

BOOO. I don't want to pay tho. So expensive.

AHH!

I will get it.

Deck Garden 2008! [May. 13th, 2008|11:27 am]
So far I have lavender, chives, rosemary, thyme, basil (purple and green), oregano, and bitter melon. I'll likely do cherry tomatoes again.

I also think I'd like to try strawberries and zucchini, too. We'll see how that goes. Last year I killed my pumpkin attempt and I'd like to try that again as well.

I baked some bread last night in the new breadmaker...Something healthy and whole wheat...Boo! It is really good. I'm using it for my sandwich today.

Tonight I'm making a banana cake with sour cream frosting for the Word on the Street Board meeting tomorrow. Should be good.

I am considering having fewer domestic hobbies. Maybe I will get a ham radio.

Let's make bread!!! [May. 10th, 2008|09:20 pm]
[Tags|]

I had a really good sandwich today! The sand part was all right--chicken salad. But the wich part! That was awesome. Freshly baked bread! It was from some little cafe near me that I've never been to because I don't ever leave my house. Ever.

I've long been intrigued but the idea of getting a breadmaker and I think this has sold me on buying one. I mean, I love baking bread. I love the process involved--From activating the yeast to kneading to waiting for it to rise...The Snob in me is afraid to make this purchase because I'm afraid it will make me less of a foodie, but who am I kidding? How often do I bake bread? Like never! I haven't made Challah in years. Mmmm. Challah.

Every store I've Googled sells the one I want at the same price (Cuisinart for $139.00), so I think I'll check out Williams-Sonoma on Monday because they have the best return policy in case anything ever goes wrong with it. I am so excited. Yum!

I also had gelato from Hollywood Gelato today...And as usual, I will argue to the death that it's gelato is the best in Toronto. My friend ordered the lemon meringue pie (I meant to myself, but I got confused about what I was ordering...Shaddup.) and it was so AWESOME. It actually tasted like, well, lemon meringue pie!!! Not just lemon! But lemon. meringue. pie! (I was so upset that I screwed up my own order. Fie! Just another reason to go back soon! :p)

Notes from today [Apr. 11th, 2008|10:59 pm]
-from the inside, a maximum security prison looks and feels exactly like a high school...truly.

-the memorial was really, really nice. Colleagues wrote poems, shared anecdotes and one of them even sang some beautiful gospel music.

-while my father was well-respected, i have a feeling that was more because of his credentials as opposed to his person; a lot of his "quirks" spilled over into his work life...i.e., the mess spilled over to his office (it took them three days to clean out), the self-neglect was apparent to his coworkers, he sometimes wore his clothing inside out or backwards apparently, etc., etc.

-that said, I don't think he could have worked in a better place--The nurses on staff, all of his colleagues, tried to take care of him. One in particular, Maria, would invite him over to her house to have dinner with her family and also packed enough every lunch so that he would have one too. (She later told me that after her 15 year old son met him, he said, "Mom, when you introduced that man to me, did you mean to say that he IS a psychiatrist or that he SEES one?" Kids know creepy, I guess.)

-his coworkers had Googled my brothers and me to find out what we looked like. Also, family friends who are in their 70s whom we had not seen for over 20 years also admitted to Googling us to find out what we were up to. I find this fascinating.

-anyways, we learned a lot about his personality...Or another side of his personality...People thought that he was a funny guy. We never thought so. I know his brother never thought so either. He wasn't a funny man. So this strikes me as odd. He could insult people, he was sarcastic...Maria mentioned to me that some of the things he would say were kinda on the biting side. My father's old best friend (they met in 1948 when they were both 8) said, "Stan's sense of humour wasn't just dry...It was parched."

-also, we went back to the house to do some more sorting today--completely finished with the personal papers right now--and also came across a video from Easter in like..1985 or 1986. O M G. It is so awesome. I had a voice like an elf! :D

Today we go to the memorial.

The most exciting part though about the memorial is that it is going to be held in the chapel at a MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISON!

A part of me is incredibly intrigued by this factor!

This should be interesting [Apr. 6th, 2008|12:20 am]
We're going to a Memorial on Friday.

My brother got this email from one of the correctional facilities where my father worked:

Neil: I hope this e-mail finds you well.

Due to the great interest amongst staff at both this and other facilities, we have arranged for a service to honour the memory of Stan. The service is being conducted on Friday, April 11, 2008, at 1:30 pm in the Chapel of the Vanier Centre for Women.

Accordingly, I wanted to extend an invitation to you and your siblings to join us at the memorial service. As I explained previously, your Father was extremely well liked and respected and I know that staff would certainly enjoy having the opportunity to meet you and your sister and brother.

The facility is easy to find as we are located at the junction of HWY 401 and Halton Rd. 25 (formerly HWY 25) in Milton. However if you do have any questions regarding the location of the facility please contact me.

Should you have any questions pertaining to any of the above information please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Take care!

Yesterday, my friend Wallace Edwards stopped by for a chat. (He's an award winning author and illustrator of amazing picture books. :0)

He told me about a collection of cautionary tales he was supposed to illustrate in the mid-1980s. The book never got published--at least not with his illustrations--but this tale is so very interesting and affecting that I couldn't help but share it.

Once upon a time there was a Fly darting around a pond. Here and there he went. Over and under the reeds...Until he chanced upon his reflection in the water. When he saw his reflection, he couldn't help but exclaim, "I love you! I love you! I love you!" over and over and over. Fly was in love with himself.

Princess Frog overheard Fly singing to himself and believed that he was talking about her. "Could it be me he loves? He must be talking about me!"

Fly continued to sing and Princess Frog began to follow him. She jumped from lily pad to lily pad while Fly went on his way... Around and around the pond...Above and beside the water buzzing to himself.

"I love you! I love you! I love you!"

"I'm over here! Wait for me!" Princess Frog yelled as she chased Fly.

"I love you! I love you! I love you!" Fly did not hear or notice Princess Frog.

Princess Frog could not keep up with Fly--He was going too fast. She was trying so hard to get his attention. Soon she slipped off of a lily pad and fell into the water. So exhausted from the chase, she did not have the energy to swim...So she drowned.

As the Fly continued to sing "I love you! I love you! I love you!" to himself.

So very sleepy and so very scattered [Mar. 25th, 2008|11:07 pm]
-I watched the first episode of Seinfeld today. Heehee. It wasn't that funny at all. :) I also got Jamie Oliver's new cook book...It's soo pretty. He really makes beautiful books.

-We're chugging along with Estate stuff...Forms, a lot of forms to fill out. Waiting for probate.

-I keep having weird dreams...Boo.

-Also, I'm still job searching. What a slow process....My friend told me that Jan, Feb & Mar are slow....Well, April better pick up. I've only applied to three jobs in the last three months. I was thinking I'd be applying to a job a week when I first started this hunt...But the pickings are slim. That said, because I am employed now, I'm being a little more picky than I would if I were unemployed...But I know I'm not being TOO picky. So, what's up, buttercup??? Awesome Job Me Now!

-Larry's started to tear out the carpets of the house, so that we can get started with the renovations...(This will also help reduce the smell and dust problem--my throat closes up within 20 minutes of being in there.) That said, there are still a few rooms to clear out--Just stuff tho...All the garbage is out. He used four oversized dumpsters so far.

-I have about 20 Super 8 home movies I'm going to get converted to DVDs...I'm really excited about this. :)

- I was finally able to talk to my dad's oldest friend--He's known my father since Grade 5. It was a really nice, brief conversation.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and emails! I'm sorry that I haven't responded to all of them yet...I will. :)

I still have several very dear and old friends of mine that I haven't told...Ahh...I sent others the link to this journal (hence the public posts)...Energy is really lacking when it comes to certain things like notifications, but not form-filling, I assure you. ;p
